We feel like our outreach time and the area in general need a lot of intercession to break through the spiritual walls that have been hardened against the Gospel for centuries, so for 7 days we took prayer shifts for 12 hours a day. Even for those of us who find it a struggle to pray for an hour or more, it was a beautiful experience. God keeps reminding us that He wants us to wait on Him and trust Him to show us bit by bit what the next step should be.
Getting out in the city: Last Saturday evening was the first time we offered free face painting and balloon figures for kids in the city square. We had so many children come to us that we couldn’t paint all of their faces. Many kids and parents asked us why we were there, which led to good conversations and possible long-term connections, including a yoga teacher and a senior who let Karin pray for her healing (Karin had seen her in a vision before we arrived). As God has shown us to focus on building friendships with people by simply spending more time in Užice, on Monday we started simply hanging out in small groups in a park downtown by the river, where a lot of people spend time. We also had an intercession time there on Tuesday. Praise God, one teenager gave her life to Jesus after talking to Mary and Karin! Mary is like a celebrity here, and many people are interested in talking to her because there are only two Black people in the whole city. We’re also able to start conversations more easily when the children are with us. Another activity we’re planning to continue for the next few weeks is to play football with the local boys and teenagers just down the road from the base house in the village of Bela Zemlja (which means White Land). They were even more interested in talking to us than we expected.
Café: On Sunday we started the café’s Spanish Conversation Club, and three young people came who are new to us. For us, that was a good start, considering that the football finals were on. The conversation wasn’t deep, but it was good, and they’re planning on returning, so that’s a start to building relationships. Wednesday night English Conversation Club was similar but with deeper conversations with two men we’re all getting to know better. Hannie also created a warm, inviting atmosphere by getting us to sing along with her beautiful voice and guitar playing. Another first – also a success – at the café was the karaoke night on Friday. Everyone had fun and participated well as if we had all known each other for a long time. Most of our visitors this week were new and found out about our events through Facebook, which is a good sign that advertising is working. Two of the girls said they loved the atmosphere and felt as if they were coming home as soon as they set foot in the café. May God show them that what they feel is Him . . . and may they truly “come home”!
Please keep praying for the people we’ve been in contact and for us!
